Being a child of the Seventies, Vajrapani Institute is officially middle-aged and it’s a time when the need for maintenance is jarringly apparent. Facing middle-age prudently, we’ve been busy working on self care. A whirlwind of critical upgrades and repairs took place here this year, and Phase 2 is scheduled for 2018. The project entails overhauling our power generation and distribution, plus water, gas and communications distribution. It’s costing almost $1 million.
Last winter’s storms took us by surprise, tacking road and culvert repairs and landslide stabilization onto our list. We’re making good headway, but a special challenge lies ahead: the task of repairing our part of the road and replacing culverts. It’s 1.7 miles of dirt road wedged between a hill and a creek. The cost is approximately $50,000.
“Without well built culverts, our road is at risk of washing away. We’re addressing a very basic need here: access to Vajrapani Institute. Depriving people of this would come at a huge price. This place is a dharma haven.”
~Catherine Slocock, Community Relations Coordinator, Vajrapani Institute
Knowing how critical this road work is for safety and access, anonymous community members are offering a matching grant up to $20,000. We’re calling it our “Rocky Road Challenge”. The rewards are better than ice-cream; you’re helping to nourish people spiritually! This is your invitation. Please join us and take up the challenge.
The matching offer is open until January 15th, 2018.
