Celebrating Empathy and Connection: Kamala

Celebrating Empathy and Connection: Kamala

We asked Kamala, 16, some questions about her life and her experience at Vajrapani Institute. Kamala has been attending Family Camp annually since she was 5 years old. This is what she had to say about the qualities that lead her to rejoice and the lessons she has learned here.

What is it you most celebrate about yourself?

I chose empathy because I believe that I have a good ability to understand how others feel and see things how others see it. Empathy allows me to connect with the suffering of others, even if I don’t know them, which than enables me to help others in an effective way.

My sense of compassion for others derives from my empathetic personality, which I think is the most valuable quality about myself because it allows me to aid others.

What’s the most precious thing Vajrapani Institute has given to you?

The first experiences of true joy that I can recall are my moments spent at Vajrapani, where life is simple, peaceful, and rejuvenating. For many, including myself, Vajrapani is a refuge from the chaotic and materialistic world we live in because it offers an accepting, tranquil environment for both the individual, and the community. For the individual, Vajrapani is a place where one can not only feel the the sacredness and wisdom of Buddhist teachings, but the love and connection of the land. Together, these elements build a strongly bonded community, adding to the power of Vajrapani institute. This sense of community creates a foundation of compassion, mindfulness, and acceptance, providing the individual with a safe and solicitous environment to open up with oneself, and, most importantly, with others. In a world where community is given less value, and individuals aren’t given a peaceful environment to relax, sanctuaries like Vajrapani become more crucial to our spiritual, mental and emotional well being. Most importantly, Vajrapani is an institute that allows an individual to experience that pure, unboundless joy, which is sadly becoming a rarity in today’s reality.

Our students, volunteers, staff, and visitors gain precious knowledge and invaluable experiences here thanks to the support of all of our donors. This year you can have your donation matched until December 31st. Help us rejoice and bring out the best in everyone!
