Retreat Philosophy
Here at Vajrapani, we have found that the full benefits of the retreat experience come from the following conditions:
1. Minimizing external distractions,
2. Being still enough to connect with one’s mind,
3. Connecting with fellow retreaters and building a cohesive group energy,
4. Receiving the transference of teachings from spiritual teachers,
5. Having wraparound support from Vajrapani Institute staff members, and
6. Experiencing this sacred land with its holy objects and natural splendor.
Each retreat is an incubator for personal growth and each retreater plays an important part in this transformational process. These conditions alone can greatly increase the effects of inner change.
Therefore, we are committed to holding these retreat boundaries in order to create the best possible conditions for each individual and for the group as a whole to delve deeper into understanding the true nature of the mind. The following polices are designed to protect this space:
Can I attend any retreat as a commuter?
In order to minimize distractions to your retreat and in order to get the full experience of a contemplative retreat environment, we now hold residential retreats only. We no longer have the commuting option. Most of our retreats begin early in the morning and end late in the evening. Commuting under these conditions can be a hardship. If you are unable to afford the full cost of a residential retreat, please call our Main Office for financial aid.
Exceptions may apply to special retreats and specific events. Please see the specific registration policies for such events.
Can I attend less than the full retreat? Can I get a refund?
You are required to attend the full retreat. This helps to protect the retreat environment. Each time a retreater comes and goes, they either bring in outside energy or take away a part of the retreat energy created by the retreat group.
Any requests for early departures must be approved by our Community Relations Coordinator (CRC) before the retreat. Please call our CRC at the Main Office. The retreat price will not be pro-rated for missed nights.
Exceptions may apply to special retreats and specific events. Please see the specific registration policies for such events.
Can I arrive late to the retreat?
Please arrive during our registration time which is usually 3-5pm. Please check the retreat schedule to confirm the registration time. It is important that you arrive in time to register, settle in, choose your working meditation assignment, and attend the first session where our teachers set the tone, expectations and guidelines for the duration of the retreat.
Our staff members begin their work early on the arrival day of all retreats. You will not be able to register or check-in after 6pm. If you expect to arrive later than 6pm due to unforeseen circumstances while traveling, please call the Main Office as soon as possible so that we know your status and can assist you accordingly.

Can I arrive before the first day of the retreat?
Vajrapani Institute is closed to group retreaters until the arrival day of a retreat. This helps our staff to better prepare the facilities for all retreaters. There are accommodations nearby if you choose to stay in the area.
How much of a deposit will I need to pay in order to reserve my retreat space?
For group retreats, the minimum deposit is calculated at $25/night. When you register online, you can either select this minimum deposit amount or you can select the entire retreat fee. Please note that there is a 2.5% Paypal credit card processing charge whether you choose to pay just the deposit amount or the entire retreat fee by credit card.
What is the last day that I can register for a group retreat?
In order to accommodate any waiting lists we may have and to better organize our retreat logistics, we ask that you register at least 48 hours prior to the start of the retreat. Registrations received within this 48 hour time period will incur a $15 late fee.
What is your group retreat cancellation policy?
Deposits are non-refundable and are not transferable to another person. If you cancel your reservation more than 14 days prior to arrival, your deposit minus a $30 cancellation fee will be credited towards another group retreat within one year. No credits for deposits will be issued for cancellations that are less than 2 weeks prior to arrival.
If you paid the full retreat fee, you will be refunded that amount minus the deposit amount and the cancellation fee.
How do I get on a waitlist for the accommodation that I’d like?
When you register online and the accommodation that you choose is full, you will be prompted to select the waitlisting option. After you select the waitlisting option, you can choose to ensure your retreat space by booking another retreat accommodation if you’d like.
